Self Titled Label Launch: Soul Clap Records

Soul Clap will launch a new record label in September, simply titled Soul Clap Records.

The duo themselves describe Soul Clap Records as "a place of mystery, art and experimentation" and "a home for our music and our many aliases and collaborations." That said, it will launch with an EP from Night Plane, AKA Brooklyn-based artist (and past RA contributor) William Rauscher. The Heartbeat EP shows Rauscher teaming up with a few different artists, including Heather D'Angelo from Au Revoir Simone, who sings on "Gold Soundz" (a Pavement cover) and "Gates of Dawn," which Soul Clap describe as "one of our favorite Burning Man jams last year."

Heartbeat will be released in a few different forms—first a 7-inch with the original and instrumental version of the title track, then as a 12-inch with "Gold Soundz" and a Wolf + Lamb remix of "Gates of Dawn," then digitally in October with two more mixes of the same track, including the "Burning Man Mix," which you can stream or download right here.

Deniz Kurtel's second LP: The Way We Live

Wolf + Lamb will release the sophomore album from Deniz Kurtel on June 4th.


The Way We Live sees the Turkish-born artist engage in a collaboration on each of its 12 tracks. Wolf + Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi is the most frequent guest, appearing four times under his own name and once as one half of Wolf + Lamb. San Fran trio PillowTalk appear three times throughout, while further members of the "Marcy All Stars"—Soul Clap, Tanner Ross, Thugfucker, Voices of Black—further colour the record. There's also a hook-up with Art Department's Kenny Glasgow on the track "Don't Wanna Be."



Stylistically, its unclear as to what type of sounds Kurtel explores on The Way We Live, although something in the vein of her 2011 debut for Crosstown Rebels, Music Watching Over Me, which traded in smoky, pop-tinged deep house, is to be expected.

Soul Clap @ Dubspot Video Recap + Session File: Ableton Live & Midi Sync Collaborative Workshop

On May 9 2011, the electronic music production duo of Charles Levine and Eli Goldstein, better known as Soul Clap dropped by Dubspot NYC for a free workshop to demonstrate their collaborative workflow with Ableton Live and multiple performers using MIDI controllers and computers all synced together for a performance/jam session.

The workshop started with a discussion on Soul Clap’s history and philosophies on production and DJing, lead to an interactive performance with six Dubspot students on M-Audio Axiom 25 MIDI controllers playing assigned parts such as drums, bass, synths, etc. The event was very well-attended, and we broadcasted a live stream of the entire event here on our blog. The result of that collaboration is presented here, and we encourage you to download the Ableton Live Session File [zip file], jam out, and leave a comment with a link to to your creation.

Soul Clap Vs Wolf & Lamb + Free Tracks

Soul Clap have jumped into the spotlight of the house music community in recent years – a name eponymous with a slower tempo sexy vibe that has crept into the clubs, the charts and top house labels labels with stunning execution of sound. They made their way into playlists worldwide with remixes of Fleetwood Mac and Jamie Foxx but then slipped their own blends into the mix more recently with original (and unique) tracks like “Lonely C.” Eli (Elyte) Goldstein Charles (Cnyce) Levine certainly understand the music – they have been honing their craft at clubs and parties for over a decade while living in Boston, MA. But they also seem to have their finger on the pulse of the market and have quickly become one of the biggest sensations to hit the world circuit of DJ/Producers in the past year, with releases on Wolf + Lamb, Airdrop and Crosstown Rebels. Those releases helped Eli and Charlie find their way into the biggest sound systems around the globe – playing Fabric, The Marcy Hotel and Watergate in 2010. Next came two dj mixes that were released last month: first a DJ Kicks mixwith Wolf + Lamb that is getting high marks from the journalists. Then came “Social Experiments 002,” a party-centric mix for Toronto tastemaker Johnny White’s No.19 label.

While they’ve become very successful at their craft they also bring a down-to-earth (we’re in it for the music and you are too) vibe. And you immediately get the impression that they take this thing seriously – it’s a job (albeit one of the coolest jobs you can have.) I was interested in hearing about how they got this movement going and what sorts of work it takes to get to the world circuit of dance music.

Art Department New Album on Crosstown Rebels....

Art Department have unveiled details for their debut album, The Drawing Board. Given the soaring popularity of lastyear's "Without You," you'd think Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow had been at it together for years. In fact, though both artists have long been active in Toronto's club scene, that 12-inch was the first (and is still the only) record in the duo's catalog. Much like that massive single, their debut album is all about sinister but sexy vocal house, often with Glasgow's own deep croon.

The Drawing Board also features a few guest appearances: Seth Troxler delivers vocals on a new track called "Living the Life" as well as the already released "Vampire Nightclub," and Osunlade joins Boston duo Soul Clap on "We Call Love." The album will come out on CD through Crosstown Rebels at the end of April. A month ahead of its release, Art Department will debut their new live act during the Get Lost party at Electric Pickle in Miami.

K7 unveils Wolf + Lamb vs Soul Clap DJ Kicks

The next edition of !K7's DJ Kicks series is mixed by American duos Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap.

Over the past few years, the two DJ teams have carved a new niche for house music in the US, thanks in part to the Wolf + Lamb label and its parties at The Marcy Hotel in Brooklyn. Both outfits push a sound that's a bit slower and sexier than what you're likely to hear in a European club, a vibe that Soul Clap's Eli Goldstein dubs "gentle and deep." After a couple of European tours and a series of big EPs, the foursome have settled in Miami for the winter and gotten to work on their first major compilation, which aims to encapsulate their trademark sound by highlighting many of artists from their enclave in the Northeast.

"The concept for this mix was originally going to be to use our favourite tracks from the last two years--y'know, classic stuff," Wolf + Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi says. "But then we thought it might be a stronger idea to do something that was about our world. We have such a strong sense of collective about the way we do things at the Marcy Hotel and on the Wolf + Lamb label... We figured if we could bring that to a mix and keep it in the family, with people who've released on the label we would have something special."

This means loads of new material by Wolf + Lamb regulars, such as Deniz Kurtel, Slow Hands and Greg Paulus of No Regular Play, plus Zev and Gadi themselves. Meanwhile, Soul Clap pay homage to their hometown of Boston with exclusive tunes by Tanner Ross and SECT. Goldstein makes his solo debut as Eli Gold, while Charles Levine (Soul Clap's other half) tries out his vocal talents on "Lonely C." Friends of family like Lee Curtiss and Benoit & Sergio fit into the tracklist as well.

According to Charlie Levine, there's one thing you can specifically expect not to hear on the mix: pop edits. "For Soul Clap, a lot of what we've done that has been hyped over the last couple of years has been edits," he says. "Now we're looking at all original material released on !K7. It's a timeless label and DJ Kicks is one of the oldest compilation series. It totally legitimizes Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap and this new sound."

The Boston-bred duo provide a soundtrack of mellow grooves for the end of summer.

Get the ladies on the dance floor, and the rest will follow. It's a simple rule. But Soul Clap's Charles Levine and Eli Goldstein understand it better than most. Although funk and jazz were the pair's first respective musical loves, they found a common passion in searching out disco, house and techno records at Boston's Vinyl Connection store, where they were schooled by resident disco connoisseur Caril Mitro.

Itzamna and Airdrop were early supporters, but it's their ongoing hook-up with the Wolf + Lamb crew that was the duo's real tipping point, culminating in a series of edits that housed up the likes of Fleetwood Mac, R. Kelly and Stevie Wonder, which have become staples in their DJ sets. Recently, the duo have released their Action/Satisfaction EP on Crosstown Rebels following a tequila-fuelled session at Damian Lazarus' Los Angeles abode, and when they're not in the studio, they're busy either touring the globe, or in Berlin where they've recently taken up residence.

Time To Get iLL Music With Crazy Larry

New York-based DJ/producer Crazy Larry will begin a new label, Time To Get iLL Music, early next year.

Conceived as an extension of the parties Larry throws under the Time To Get iLL banner, the imprint will aim to offer "a platform for like minded artists to release the music that they want to make, not music they think has to be a chart topper." The first release will arrive from Glacier—the collaborative project between Larry and Pier Bucci—and will act as a follow-up to the duo's Rocky Mountains EP for Wagon Repair, which was put out back in 2007.

A deep house excursion from Canadian producer Jay Tripwire has been lined-up for Time To Get iLL #2, while the third release on the label will be something of a concept record. The Bolt Bus EP (named after the Boston to New York service) will see Larry collaborate with three Boston-based artists, namely Soul Clap, Tanner Ross and Adam Collins. We caught up with the crazy one via email to ask what to expect from Time To Get iLL Music.

Tell us about the thinking behind starting Time To Get iLL Music?

So the gist of the label is simple: I have been doing events for almost five years now, and I just wanted to take my career and parties in general a step further. Parties come and go but you really don't have anything lasting with events. Sure, you can keep flyers and recordings, but having a vinyl out and about is a more lasting icon. I have always wanted to do a label, and I think the time is right now.

I'm not looking to sign huge hits and chart toppers, but I am looking to run a consistent label with good music that DJs like myself and other serious artists (much like the Air London peeps) can count on every release. I also want to tie the label into artists that I have previously booked, or people that I meet along the way with doing events. Kind of keeping it in the family so to speak.

You and Pier Bucci are on the first release as Glacier: How did you two meet?

We met when Pier came to Denver for the first time back in 2005, I think. He was playing for a party I was helping promote. We hit it off right away; we talked gear and production for hours into the night. We both wish we had more time, but he had to get to the next gig. We stayed in touch, and about a year later I was going to start doing my own party in Denver, Uddermadness. Pier ended up being the first artist I booked for the opening party. He was either going to stay in Denver all week, or head to NY and stay in a hotel... I proposed we chill out in Denver and go to the mountains, as I had a cabin at St Mary's glacier, so we decided to take apart my studio and head up there for the week. After four days of hiking, cooking, and lots of music making, we had a finished EP! I sent the tracks a few months later to my friend at Wagon Repair, and the rest is history.

Are there any plans to take the partnership into the live arena?

We have played live a few time already, and plan to tour on the release. First was in London at Dig Your Own Rave at T Bar—Matthew Styles' party. Next was for the first Cheap Sunglasses Party at WMC... that was a massive one, and we played in Ibiza last year at the Zoo party.

What's coming up for the label?
