MK next up to mix Defected's In The House series

Marc Kinchen has mixed the latest instalment in Defected's In The House series.

Known more for his original productions and remixes than his DJing—in fact, he rarely DJ'd at all in his early years—the release will be Kinchen's first commercial mix.Defected presents MK In The House is heavily focused on the producer's own remixes and dubs under the name MK. It contains a number of classic tracks, such as 1993's "Love Changes" featuring Alana and the MK dub of Jodeci's "Freek'n You," first released in '95. There's some brand new material, too, most notably Kinchen's own remixes of The Pet Shop Boys' "Can You Forgive Her" and FCL's "It's You."

A press release states that the two-disc mix was recorded in one long session. "A lot of my DJ friends, I thought they did their mixes and podcasts live, but a lot of them use Ableton," Kinchen says. "This was the first time I did it that way and it was pretty cool for me." Defected also revealed that Kinchen is working on a live band project with Hot Natured member Lee Foss and vocalist Anabel (the three of them have already teamed up on "Electricty," disc two's closing track.) The digital version of the mix comes with a bonus 10-track release featuring MK remixes and original productions.

Brand New Kerri Chandler Interview & Mix For RA

New Jersey's deep house deity turns in a rare recorded mix.

"It feels like I started all over from scratch," Kerri Chandler told us in a recent interview. He was of course referring to his relationship with Circo Loco, the Italian party brand based out of DC-10 in Ibiza. After a period of persuasion Chandler agreed to play for the crew at their 2010 opening/closing party and has since become an integral part of the family, making multiple appearances throughout the 2011 season and generally stepping up his worldwide DJ presence. It was evident in our talking with Chandler that the partnership had rejuvenated him in many ways, although that's not to say he was somehow struggling before. Chandler is known as one of New Jersey/New York's most celebrated and important house music practitioners, with a recording career stretching back to 1991 and a classics-lined discography to prove it. As part of our on-going VS series, Chandler will link up with Chez Damier—himself a revered house music institution—for a back-to-back session this coming Saturday night at BeCool in Barcelona for our annual off-Sonar soiree.

Rolling, timeless house music is the order of the day on RA.315, a warm-up to this Saturday's festivities and a showcase of where Chandler is at in 2012.

What have you been up to recently?

I've restarted Madhouse and started a new label, MadTech. I originally started Madhouse way back and it's a project that's always been close to my heart. I've got a great team of people around me and we have some really interesting records out and forthcoming. It doesn't just follow one line of sound, there's something there for everyone—I guess that's something that's reflected in my DJ sets.

Other than that, I've a really exciting tour schedule coming up including the RA event with Chez Damier this weekend in Barcelona and my residency with Circo Loco at DC-10.

How and where was the mix recorded?

It was recorded at my house with turntables and CDJs. I have the whole basement of my house as my studio (playground!) which is completely full of kit from vintage drum machines, synthesises and turntables to the latest NI soft/hardware. When I tour I usually play from two Technics and two CDJs, depending on my mood, so that's how I did this mix.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

It was a reflection of my mood at the moment. Anyone who's heard me play knows I can (and do!) go everywhere, so the mix is just a snapshot of my mind at the time.

How do you plan to approach the back-to-back set with Chez this coming weekend?

I haven't seen Chez in a long time—I'm just going to go and have fun!

What are you up to next?

Touring, touring and more touring, and studio work in between! No sleep 'till Brooklyn! See you in Barcelona!

Cutting Edge Mixed By Luke Solomon

Luke Solomon has mixed Cutting Edge, a new compilation for Brazil's D-Edge label.

The imprint, as is clear from the name, is connected to the Sao Paolo club of the same name. The venue is one of the most credible and underground clubs on the continent, regularly bringing in acts from the house and techno world. As the co-head of Classic Records, Solomon's house credentials are unparalleled, so he seems a natural fit for the imprint's debut bow into the CD market. Throughout, Solomon balances things between house and techno, with things reaching a peak early on via Roberto Rodriguez's epic remix of Scope's "Seven Reasons." It's the seventh official mix compilation from Solomon in his lengthy career, and his first since 2006's A Classic Decade.

Maya Jane Coles mixes DJ-Kicks

Maya Jane Coles has mixed the next edition of DJ-Kicks, due for release in April.

Coles has been one of house music's most popular new artists ever since her breakthrough single, What They Say, came out on Real Tone Records in 2010. At just 24 years old, the London-based DJ and producer is now a hot commodity at clubs and festivals around the world, and last year slipped into the top 10 of your favorite DJs of 2011. DJ-Kicks will be her first commercial mix CD, and according to Coles, shows her at her most diverse.

"I don't just do one thing and I wanted [the mix] to reflect that," she says. "Most of the mixes I've put out there so far have been house based, but I also produce stuff under the Nocturnal Sunshine moniker, which is more two-step/bass influenced stuff. This mix evolved into something that wasn't just four-to-the-floor."

Like every edition of DJ-Kicks, the mix features exclusive tracks from the curator: one is "Not Listening," and the other is "Meant To Be," a track from Coles' more two-step influenced alter-ego, Nocturnal Sunshine.

Mark Radford mixes Rinse: 18

Mark Radford has mixed Rinse: 18, due for release at the beginning of March.

As a radio station and a mix CD series, Rinse's main focus is all things bass-related, from grime right through to funky, but Radford's mix shows that they dabble in European-style 4/4 as well. Though his roots are in jungle and drum & bass, the London selector has warmed more and more to house music over the years. "When I started playing this stuff, no-one else was really playing it, and people were turning their noses up at it," he says. "It wasn't until they started coming to the clubs, hearing it and seeing what it was doing at the parties, that everyone started getting into it."

Radford mostly sticks to contemporary tech house on the mix, highlighting artists like John Tejada, Subb-an, Solomun and Steve Bug, but there is a hint of bass as well, thanks to Al Bassline's "Bouyancy."

Tracklist
01. Alex Niggeman - Point of No Return
