Freerange Vinyl Boxset: Out of the Ashes

To mark the anniversary of last year's riots in the UK, Freerange have put together a vinyl box set called Out of the Ashes. 

Freerange was among the many labels who lost their back catalog in the fire at the PIAS warehouse. Out of the Ashes collects 12-inches whose original pressings were lost in that fire. In an essay accompanying the release, music journalist Joe Muggs says the intention of the release is "not to commemorate wanton destruction, or to mourn a loss, but to celebrate a lesson learned and a passion rekindled," referring to the music community's enduring passion for vinyl. 

"Were we all hanging on to vinyl records simply as an expensive emblem of times past?" he writes. "Could the destruction of the back catalogue be symbolic, a sign that in a volatile era we needed to stop clinging to these lumps of plastic and move with the times? After reflection the answer for us, and many other labels, was a resounding and resolute 'no!'"

Out of the Ashes also includes a number of tracks that were only available digitally until now. It packs in five 12-inches in total, comes with artwork by I-Want Design, and will be limited to 250 copies.

There's More to Life Than This: Ben Westbeech's New Offereing.

Ben Westbeech will release his second album, There's More to Life Than This, this September on Strictly Rhythm.

Westbeech describes his latest effort as "house-inspired, rather than straight up house music"—a description that also suits his overall style, which has always balanced electronic production with a singer-songwriter approach.

There's More To Life Than This will be his first full-length since 2007's Welcome to the Best Years of Your Life. According to a press release, it was recorded over the past year in New York, Berlin, London, Munich, Stockholm, Amsterdam and Bristol. Every track shows Wesbteech teaming up with a guest producer, including house artists like Henrik Schwarz, Midland and Motor City Drum Ensemble. He also enlists the help ofGeorg Levin and Rasmus Faber, two producer/singer-songwriters like himself, both of whom appear twice on the album.

Fred Everything mixes Five Years of Lazy Days Compilation

Fred Everything's Lazy Days imprint will release a 13-track compilation for its fifth anniversary later this month.

Naturally, the collection draws only on music released through Lazy Days, most of which falls within its signature style of party-friendly deep house. Some tracks are new and exclusive, while others are taken from the label's back catalogue, highlighting some of Fred's favourite cuts. The new material comes from artists like Kruse & Nuernberg, Ian Pooley, Greg Wilson and Art of Tones. The label has also been mindful of DJs keen to use the new tracks behind the decks: Five Years of Lazy Days will be available as an unmixed collection or as a continuous mix.
