Maceo Plex Mixes New DJ-Kicks

Maceo Plex has mixed the latest edition of !K7's DJ Kicks, due out on April 30th.

American producer Eric Estornel (who also produces under the name Maetrik) has enjoyed a rapid rise to fame in the past few years, as documented in a recent feature on RA. Part of that is likely due to his prolific release schedule, dropping hooky deep house tracks like "Vibe Your Love" and "Under The Sheets" on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, No. 19 Music and his own Ellum Audio.

In a press release, Estornel promises his mix will be a "little more deep and futuristic" than what he calls the "throwback" trend of early '90s house currently gripping the house scene. The disc will feature a tracks both new and old (some dating back 20 years), with almost all of them edited by Estornel himself because "a lot of them were missing percussion, or some other element I thought they could use." In addition to Maceo Plex selections, the mix also includes the likes of Move D, TV Baby and Detroit's DJ Stingray. As with all DJ-Kicks, Estornel's will feature an exclusive track: his own "Galactic Cinema."

Antibalas Retrospective Mix by Martín Perna

Formed in 1998, the Brooklyn-based music collective Antibalas has shared its dynamic afrobeat and funk sound to thirty-five countries and over 1000 performances. From humble beginnings in Brooklyn block parties and community benefits, Antibalas has since been featured at prestigious festivals including Coachella, Glastonbury, Montreux, Newport Jazz, and at venues from Rikers Island to Carnegie Hall.
Drawing on musical lineages steeped in jazz, funk, Afro-Caribbean, and West African music, Antibalas is widely recognized for its mastery of and innovation in the afrobeat musical form created in the early 1970s by Nigerian composer/activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Recently, Antibalas opened 2009 at Carnegie Hall, as part of the Tibet House Benefit. After performing original material, they backed Grammy-winning Beninoise singer Angelique Kidjo and Vampire Weekend. Later that month, Antibalas met the Roots head-to-head in the Red Bull Soundclash in Boston. In June 2009, the two bands joined forces with Public Enemy to recreate the classic album “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” live at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. The horn section joined the Roots twice that summer on NBC’s Jimmy Fallon show with Public Enemy and Paul Simon.
In early 2010, the group made its first trip to Australia and New Zealand, performing at major rock, world music, and arts festivals as well as a cabaret show with DJ Gilles Peterson. In July 2010, Antibalas will tour the west coast, including a performance at Reggae on the River, coinciding with the rerelease of their “Who Is This America” album on Ropeadope, and a limited-edition 12” vinyl release of new material.
Antibalas members have also been at the heart of the Tony award-winning Broadway musical FELA! Born as a series of workshops with choreographer Bill T Jones in late 2006, several Antibalas musicians, including Aaron Johnson (musical director) and Jordan McLean (assistant musical director), and Stuart Bogie have helped create what associate producer Questlove has called “The most uncut funk production ever!” After a triumphant off-Broadway run, the show launched on Broadway in November 2009 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, with Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith as executive producers, attracting a cavalcade of stars including Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Sting, Robert deNiro, and Toni Morrison.
Antibalas musicians can been seen and heard with major artists across genres. Members of the group teamed up with the Dap Kings to create the grooves for Amy Winehouse’s multi-platinum “Back to Black” album and continue to work with producer Mark Ronson. The horn section is featured prominently on albums by TV on the Radio, Medeski, Martin and Wood, and won a Grammy for their work on Angelique Kidjo’s “Djin Djin” album. The group has also performed live with a diverse group of artists including Burning Spear, Baaba Maal, Sinead O’Connor, Gomez, and members of the FELA show.

Mark Radford mixes Rinse: 18

Mark Radford has mixed Rinse: 18, due for release at the beginning of March.

As a radio station and a mix CD series, Rinse's main focus is all things bass-related, from grime right through to funky, but Radford's mix shows that they dabble in European-style 4/4 as well. Though his roots are in jungle and drum & bass, the London selector has warmed more and more to house music over the years. "When I started playing this stuff, no-one else was really playing it, and people were turning their noses up at it," he says. "It wasn't until they started coming to the clubs, hearing it and seeing what it was doing at the parties, that everyone started getting into it."

Radford mostly sticks to contemporary tech house on the mix, highlighting artists like John Tejada, Subb-an, Solomun and Steve Bug, but there is a hint of bass as well, thanks to Al Bassline's "Bouyancy."

Tracklist
01. Alex Niggeman - Point of No Return
02. Rekleiner - Some People
03. Mark Henning- Sin City

DJ Sneak mixes Fabric 62

DJ Sneak will helm the next installment of fabric's long running mix series.

The self-described "house gangsta" has been a clubland staple for decades. The forthcoming Fabric mix sees Sneak sticking with the upbeat and vocal-heavy style he's pushed for most of his career, mostly through tracks that came out in the last few years.

Resident Advisor Podcast: RA.278 Mike Huckaby

RA.278 Mike HuckabyA Detroit favourite plays his favourite house records.

Mike Huckaby is one of electronic music's teachers. Here's a man that
recently told usthat he'd prefer to stay in his home city of Detroit tutoring kids on music production at the city's Youthville centre than playing festivals in Europe. A deep house producer who spent years honing his synthesis and programming skills only to publish his knowledge in the form of a sample CD. ("I just have a sense of compassion to help others not to be stuck regarding the music making process like I was in the past," he told LWE last year.)

Our
Machine Love feature with him last year was full of anecdotes concerning this struggle to succeed in music making, yet it always ran parallel with his desire to share all he'd unearthed. If this is all beginning to sound a little too feel-good then we should also emphasise that Huckaby is pretty badass DJ and producer in his own right. He's been releasing grade-a deep house since 1995 and despite his statement to the contrary regularly finds himself touring throughout Europe among other worldwide destinations like the upcoming Decibel festival in Washington state.

As for Huckaby's mix for us? "These are the records that I want to hear for the rest of my life."
What have you been up to recently?

I'm quite busy these days. I've just finished
Tresor's 20th Anniversary mix CD; remixes for Vladislav Delay and Pole; a limited release for Sushitech; Sun Ra Edits Vol 2; a sample CD for Red Bull Music Academy in Australia; a lecture and workshop there; the Decibel Festival in Seattle; as well as a European tour that starts in October. In addition to that I have several workshops in Europe and Russia too. So yeah, I'm quite busy these days.
How and where was the mix recorded?

At home in Detroit with vinyl and turntables.
Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

These are the records that I want to hear for the rest of my life. This is also my last podcast for 2011. So the best has been saved for the last, so to speak. I found an old reel tape when I was on the Electrifying Mojo's show, so I crafted a nice little intro, and mixed from there. That was one thing my reel-to-reel came in handy for.
It's impossible to capture a city in a film. What did we miss that you think is important about Detroit in Real Scenes?

I think coverage of Ron Murphy's contribution to Detroit should have been discussed, as well as Archer's vinyl pressing plant in Detroit. Those things should have been included. J. Dilla's influence and popularity in Detroit could also have been discussed.
Has there been much of an upsurge in interest in Youthville since its premiere?

Absolutely. I am overwhelmed by the amount of feedback I have received about the documentary. People from all over the world have begun to contact me and make contributions towards my Ableton and Reaktor classes at Youthville. People have donated computers to students in need, and as well as financial donations to help students in need of purchasing software for the classes.

But the greatest thing that has been achieved after the documentary's premiere has been landing a sound design opportunity for the two students featured in the video. Being able to do sound design for Reaktor at 11 and 14 years old is mindblowing!

When the concept of the Detroit / Berlin connection is being discussed, Tresor and Hardwax is often the source of the conversation. But the next Detroit / Berlin connection beyond the millennium is a technological one that exists between Native Instruments, Ableton and the work that I'm doing at Youthville. Those companies have lent a tremendous amount of support.
What are you up to next?

I'm trying to get
My Life with the Wave Vol. 2 done, and I'm soon on my way to Russia.
