Basic Soul Unit preps debut album: Motional Response

Basic Soul Unit is ready to release his debut album, Motional Response.

Stuart Li makes deep house and techno with a clearly analog approach, though the result is much more unpredictable than that would make it sound—at times melodic, at others more gritty and sometimes even a bit broken-beat (at least in the case of his 12-inch for NonPlus+), he moves through a healthy variety of sounds while staying loyal to his trademark style. Motional Response will be the Toronto artist's first release on Still Music, a Chicago label that shares his taste for Detroit- and Chicago-indebted club tracks. It features all previously unreleased material. As a bonus track, label boss Jerome Derradji provides a remix of the song "Breath," featuring Underground Resistance member Gerald Mitchell on strings.

01. Across the Room

05. All Over Me

08. Intersection

Still Music Chicago will release Motional Response in December 2012.

Endangered Species, No Regular Play's Debut Album

No Regular Play will release their debut album, Endangered Species, this November on Wolf + Lamb.

No Regular Play is Nicholas DeBruyn and Greg Paulus, two childhood friends from Minnesota who became core members of the Wolf + Lamb family after attending a party at The Marcy Hotel (the labels' home base in Brooklyn) in 2006. Though most of their records are made for the club, live instrumentation is at the center of their craft: many of their songs have lead vocals, and Paulus plays trumpet during their performances (he's also played with the acclaimed indie group Beirut and Matthew Dear's live band). Endangered Species continues this trend, with the duo working in everything from grand piano to African drums to "a shaker instrument made of old dried goat toenails that rattle together" (a gift from DeBruyn's mother). The album was recorded entirely at the Marcy's studio, which doubles as its dance floor on weekends.

"People who really care about music and the art in a pure and honest way are a form of endangered species in the modern world," say No Regular Play on the subject of the album's title. "This album is a tribute to all those out there who are the genuine article."

Tracklist
01. Birdfeathers
02. Wont Quit

John Tejada preps The Predicting Machine

John Tejada is ready to release his next LP, The Predicting Machine.

More than 15 years and a few dozen releases into his career, Tejada is one of the West Coast's most consistent electronic artists. The album format has always been particularly well-suited to him: he's released nearly ten since '98, and his latest,Parabola, came out just one year ago. The Predicting Machine shows him continuing to tweak his signature sound: his melodic tech house style is still going strong, but this time it's complemented by a handful of beatless synth workouts and an occasional hint of electro. All of the tracks on the album are previously unreleased. Like his last LP, it's due for release on Kompakt.

Tracklist
01. Orbiter
02. A Familiar Mood

'Mind Over Matter' Fur Coat's Debut Album

Fur Coat will release their first album, Mind Over Matter, this September on Crosstown Rebels.

The album comes less than a year after Fur Coat first came on the radar with Space Ballad, a collaboration with Argenis Brito released on Crosstown Rebels in September. They've put out just one more EP since then: You and I with Cari Golden, also released on Crosstown. Mind Over Matter is loaded with guest appearances too, including Rap Lisa, Mel Blatt, Stee Downes and go-to tech house vocalist Big Bully. The album combines new productions with songs from their two EPs. According to group member Sergio Muñoz (AKA Delete), the title is a reference to the duo's life perspective.

"Mind Over Matter is a way of thinking that we have," says Muñoz. "We believe if you think what you want and you visualize it you can get it, and with the power of mind you can overcome any obstacle."

Deniz Kurtel's second LP: The Way We Live

Wolf + Lamb will release the sophomore album from Deniz Kurtel on June 4th.

The Way We Live sees the Turkish-born artist engage in a collaboration on each of its 12 tracks. Wolf + Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi is the most frequent guest, appearing four times under his own name and once as one half of Wolf + Lamb. San Fran trio PillowTalk appear three times throughout, while further members of the "Marcy All Stars"—Soul Clap, Tanner Ross, Thugfucker, Voices of Black—further colour the record. There's also a hook-up with Art Department's Kenny Glasgow on the track "Don't Wanna Be."

Stylistically, its unclear as to what type of sounds Kurtel explores on The Way We Live, although something in the vein of her 2011 debut for Crosstown Rebels, Music Watching Over Me, which traded in smoky, pop-tinged deep house, is to be expected.

Tracklist

01. I Knew This Would Happen with Tanner Ross feat. Pillowtalk

02. You Know It's True with Gadi Mizrahi

03. Love Triangle (Instrumental) with Wolf + Lamb

04. The Way We Live with Gadi Mizrahi

05. Hypocrite with Gadi Mizrahi

10. Blackness with Pillowtalk & Thugfucker

New Crosstown Rebels Offering: Amirali

This May, Crosstown Rebels will release the first album by new arrival Amirali.

Damian Lazarus is known for his A&R acumen, and Amirali is the latest artist he's thrust into the spotlight. The Iranian-Canadian producer hadn't put his name to any recorded material until earlier this year, when Crosstown Rebels released Beautiful World, the single extraction from the upcoming album. According to a press release, Lazarus was on the hunt for something more "alternative" when he stumbled across Amirali, and it shows—In Time is a hard-to-categorize medley of house, downtempo and avant-pop, often led by the artist's own brooding vocals. Amirali will support the album with a string of live performances throughout the spring, including dates at Get Lost in Miami and Lovebox in London.

Tracklist
01. The Harmonious Song
02. Missing
03. Just an Illusion
04. Painting on a Canvas
05. Last Words
06. Midnight Train
07. My Way
08. Beautiful World
09. Whisper
10. No Doubt
11. Hear Me

Ed Davenport debut album, Counterchange. Coming on NRK

Ed Davenport is ready to release his first album, Counterchange.

The album shows Davenport doing what he does best: ethereal deep house and techno that, as he puts it, "sits somewhere between the club and home listening." It's also touched with a bit of breakbeat flair, a style he tried out on last April's More Red Lights EP. The album features all previously unreleased tracks, including new mixes of "More Red Lights" and the title track from another one of his recent 12-inches, New Yorkshire. Due for release in March, it's the latest in a string of records on NRK Music.

Torquato & Boghosian debut on Yoruba

Andre Torquato and Paulo Boghosian are set to release their debut album onYoruba Records.

Both artists are linchpins of Brazil's deep house scene. As DJs, they hold residencies at two of Sao Paulo's most renowned nightclubs: D-Edge and Warung Beach Club. As producers they've reached international audiences through releases on Yoruba and Cécille Numbers, the latter of which saw them team up for the first time on last year's Balaka EP. Though decidedly club-friendly, many of their tracks possess an air of spirituality and mystique—a style that makes them an easy fit for Osunlade's label, which has been home to Torquato's solo work since 2008. Due out on Monday, their self-titled debut album features all previously unreleased material. It will be available exclusively as a digital release.

Tracklist
