Seth Troxler: Fireside Chat With RBMA (Audio)

It ain’t easy being from Kalamazoo. Caught equidistant from Chicago and Detroit, you can’t rightfully claim either major Midwestern city as home. Just ask Seth Troxler. After he moved to the suburbs of Detroit he spent plenty of time in the trenches at record stores, parties and the music scene, but it took a long time before he was finally accepted as one of the Motor City’s own. In his recent Fireside Chat for Red Bull Music Academy Radio, Troxler recounts how Carl Craig finally presented him with his official Detroit credentials.

Redbull Music Academy Lecture: Masters at Work

Their name says it all - Masters At Work. 'Little' Louie Vega and Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez celebrate 20 years together, channeling dance music down new paths with their inventive production style and imaginative feel for different musical forms. The two native New Yorkers have amassed an overwhelming body of work including hundreds of original productions and defiantly mix everything they can find - house, hip hop, funk, disco, Latin, African and jazz - into a universal groove. XLR8R's Shawn Reynaldo sits down with them on the couch during Red Bull Music Academy's 'New York City to SF Bay' lecture series in San Francisco to discuss the start of their careers and dissolving the barriers between genres.

Education HQ with MoodyMan @ Red Bull Music Academy

If you haven't watched this clear an hour and a half and watch it if you have seen it, watch it AGAIN. I say no more.... Real music lovers know.

Rollerball enigma and silhouetted man-on-the-mic Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann is one of the most enigmatic and charismatic figures that house music ever bred. Despite his refusal to give interviews and play the press-and-promo game, Kenny’s voice has been clearly amongst the loudest, when it comes to preserving the rich heritage of Afro-American music, while fighting the music industry powers that be.

Blessed with an immaculate way of sampling, he takes stems from blues and soul, and respectfully takes them onto the next level – just check his Tribute (To The Soul We Lost) ode to Marvin Gaye for proof. From his dark and dusty deep house tunes on Peacefrog, Planet E and his own KDJ label, to his more recent outings on the R&B-drenched Mahogani Music imprint as well as his 2009 sure-fire anthem Freaky MF, Moodymann's fingerprint has stayed unmistakable. Even a so-called techno tune like Dem Young Sconies sounds like nothing and nobody else on this planet. You can't kick this feeling when it hits!
